What to Do When a Pipe Bursts: The First 15 Minutes

Published by Muhammad Zeeshan, site operator · Updated 2026-10-23

Short answer

Close the main water shutoff first, then turn off the water heater and open the lowest faucet to drain pressure. Keep away from wet outlets, move valuables out of the water and photograph the damage before cleanup. Then call a plumber to repair the break and check why it failed.

Plumber turning a main water shutoff valve outside a stucco house

Step 1: Stop the water

In most Paramount-area homes the main shutoff is where the water line enters the house, often at the front near a hose bib, or in the meter box at the curb. Turn a gate valve clockwise until it stops; turn a lever-style ball valve a quarter turn so the handle is across the pipe.

If the house valve will not turn or breaks, the water provider can shut water off at the meter. Keep their number handy.

  • House shutoff: usually at the front wall or hose bib
  • Curb meter box: may need a meter key
  • Do not force a seized old valve; it can snap

Step 2: Make the house safe

Water and electricity do not mix. If water is near outlets, a power strip or the electrical panel, keep clear and shut off power to that area only if you can reach the panel without standing in water.

  • Turn the water heater to vacation or pilot (gas) or switch its breaker off (electric)
  • Open a faucet at the lowest point of the house to drain the lines
  • Move rugs, electronics and furniture out of the wet area

Step 3: Document the damage

Take photos and video of the break, the water and any damaged belongings before cleanup. Insurers commonly cover sudden water damage from a burst pipe but may not cover the pipe repair itself or long-term leaks, so documentation helps the claim.

Step 4: What to tell the plumber

A clear description gets the right parts on the truck.

  • Where the break is: under a sink, in a wall, ceiling or floor
  • Pipe material if visible: copper, galvanized steel or PEX
  • Whether the water is fully off
  • Whether this has happened before

Why pipes burst in a city that rarely freezes

In Southern California, bursts usually come from age and corrosion, high or surging water pressure, worn fittings and supply hoses, or pipes under slabs that move with the ground. California's plumbing code calls for a pressure regulator when street pressure exceeds 80 psi, and a failed regulator stresses every pipe in the house.

Related questions

How fast does water damage spread from a burst pipe?

A burst pipe can release several gallons a minute, and drywall, cabinets and flooring start absorbing water right away. Shutting off the main is the single most important step.

Can I turn the water back on after closing the main?

Only after the break is repaired or the affected section is capped. Turning it back on sends full pressure to the break again.

Does homeowners insurance cover a burst pipe?

Sudden and accidental water damage is often covered; the repair of the pipe itself and gradual leaks often are not. Your insurer decides based on your policy.
